5 foods to avoid with neurofibromatosis

Caused by genetic mutations that occur spontaneously at birth, neurofibromatosis leads to the growth of tumors. These tumors are known as neurofibromas. These growths can be removed through surgery or radiation therapy; however, there is no cure for this disease. Following a healthy diet routine is one way to manage neurofibromatosis. While certain foods help manage neurofibromatosis, there are a few that have to be avoided at all costs.

Processed and smoked meats
Meal preps become quite easy with processed meats.

Moreover, smoked meats add flavor to meals. However, these meats are treated through multiple processes such as fermenting, smoking, curing, and salting. This makes processed meats such as bacon, hot dogs, sausages, salami, and canned meats bad for the health. The preservatives and high sodium content don’t do much good for the body.

Soda
Fructose-based sugars are unhealthy. Packaged and bottled sodas have a high percentage of this type of sugar. Moreover, carbonated beverages also contain caffeine, which is also quite unhealthy. While a moderate amount of caffeine in the diet is not a problem, the high amount of fructose-based sugar makes soda an unhealthy beverage. Instead, opt for natural fruit juices, sparkling water, or kombucha as a substitute whenever you crave for soda.

Doughnuts
The process of baking is often recommended since it retains the nutrients in the food, unlike frying. However, certain baked goods like doughnuts don’t have much nutrient value. Doughnuts, pastries, and cookies should be avoided as these baked goods contain high amounts of sugar. Moreover, these are made from white flour which does more harm than good to one’s health.

Shellfish
People with neurofibromatosis have a high number of mast cells. So, many patients are often recommended to have a low-histamine diet. Histamine is an organic compound that is involved in the inflammatory responses of the body. Shellfish are one of the richest sources of histamines. Eating a diet rich in histamine can be detrimental to one’s health, especially in the case of neurofibromatosis.

Alcohol
A moderate amount of alcohol is sometimes recommended. In many cases, one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is suggested. However, for those with neurofibromatosis, alcohol consumption should be lowered as much as possible. This is because alcohol has high histamine content. It can increase inflammation and discomfort. Moreover, frequent consumption of alcohol can lead to obesity, sleeping disorders, and other health disorders, aggravating the symptoms of neurofibromatosis. Hence, it is best to avoid alcohol if you have neurofibromatosis.
